SkyMine Bringing Jobs and Environmental Benefits to the NEC

SkyMineGroundbreakingA cleaner environment and new employment opportunities are coming to the NEC courtesy of a special plant, which is the first of its kind in the United States.

The SkyMine plant was revealed recently during a groundbreaking event at Capital Aggregates Cement on the northeast side of San Antonio. Once fully operational in 2014, the SkyMine plant is expected to capture 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually through the direct capture of 75,000 tons and additional 225,000 tons that will be offset by the production of green products.

The Capitol SkyMine plant will employ roughly 35 people and is expected to create more than 200 jobs through the plant’s construction and on-going operations. The mechanism behind this is plant is called SkyMine, an electrolytic carbon capture technology that will selectively capture carbon dioxide, acid gases and heavy metals from the flue gas of the Capitol Aggregates Cement Plant, where the Capitol SkyMine plant will be retrofitted.  Skyonic Corporation, an Austin based corporation has teamed up with San Antonio Capital Aggregates to present SkyMine.

The plant is expected to turn a profit within three years from the sale of the products of this process including sodium bicarbonate, hydrogen chloride, and bleach.

Speakers at the groundbreaking included Joe Jones, founder and CEO of Skyonic and Greg Hale, President of Capitol Aggregates. The excitement and anticipation was high.

According to Joe Jones, founder and CEO of Skyonic,”Industrial manufacturing is a cornerstone of the global economy and we’re doing our part to making the process more lucrative for industries and cleaner for the environment.”

“The beginning of construction is a major milestone on the road to commercialization,” said Greg Hale, President of Capital Aggregates.

“I applaud the Zachry Corporation and Skyonic for setting the standard with the first commercial carbon capture plant of its kind,” Mayor Julian Castro said. “This project is another example of how San Antonio is becoming a leader in combining green technology and job creation.”

New Dunkin’ Donuts Debuts in Northeast San Antonio

San Antonio Business Journal, Tricia Lynn Silva

NEC_083013 021Dunkin’ Donuts is rolling out a new store on Tuesday, July 23 in San Antonio.

The store is located at 12311 Nacogdoches Road on the Northeast Side. The grand-opening festivities will take place at noon.

The Nacogdoches store is one of several that will be owned and operated by locally based PSP Franchising LLC. The owners behind PSP are father-and-son team Kishore and Prashant Samtani.

The Nacogdoches store is one of four restaurants that PSP hopes to open over the next several years, say the two men, who spoke with the Business Journal last May about their plans with the Dunkin’ brand.

The agreement with Dunkin’s Brands Group Inc. calls for PSP to open four restaurants, Prashant Samtani stated. Both he and his father, however, expressed confidence that the potential for the brand and PSP would go beyond four stores.

“We’re not going to wait four years,” Kishore Samtani stated. “We know the potential of this brand.”

The Nacogdoches store is the fourth Dunkin’ Donuts in San Antonio. A fifth is expected to open in the city of Windcrest at the end of this month.

  1. Joe Nunez says:

I am so glad that there is renewed interest in this area of San Antonio. I grew up between Nacogdoches and Uhr lane and now own and operate a business near Higgins and Nacogdoches. Many of the retail centers are dated and businesses do very poorly. Only through efforts like this revitalization initiative will there finally be new jobs and better businesses attracted to this area.
